Dong Fang Mei Ren Cha (dōngfāng meǐrén chá, 東方美人茶), more commonly called Bai Hao Oolong (bái háo wūlóng), is a very unique style of Taiwanese tea. Early in the season a specific type of leaf hopper (similar to a cicada) is drawn to the young leaves of the tea plant.
In Hsinchu county the tea farmers allow these insects to begin nibbling on their plants, causing the leaves to change their chemistry and release fragrant and honey-like aromas that are highly prized the world over.
